Through Living
In the valley of the Struma River, at the foot of the Pirin Mountains — where Thrace meets Macedonia — awaits not just a trip, but a return to something essential: Yourself.
Once a journalist and advertising director, today — a winemaker, storyteller, and your host.
Twenty years ago, I left city life behind and began a new chapter in the village of Ilindentsi — with wine, soil beneath my nails, and a view of the mountains.
A bottle of good wine, warm food, and a place at the table for friends.
If that speaks to you — don't just visit Bulgaria. Come and live it. The way I do.

Germany
We spent 20 unforgettable days in Ilindenski, and it felt like coming home. Nikolay welcomed us not as guests, but as old friends who had finally returned. Elena fell in love with the magic of winemaking – the grapes, the aromas, the earth. I fell for the mountains, the silence, and the long hikes with views that leave you speechless.
Bulgarian? We learned it without learning it – with morning coffee, kitchen conversations, and village people. Evening dinners around the table with homemade food and wine were like rituals – sharing, laughter, truths.
We visited Heraclea Sintica – it felt like touching antiquity. In Melnik, among the sand pyramids, time stood still. And in Sandanski – just 10 km away – we played tennis, lunched like locals, fell in love with moussaka and shopska salad.
Nikolay isn't just a host. He's someone who opens the door to something much deeper – to the soul of a land. We left Bulgaria with a new perspective on life and a friendship that will last forever.
Sweden
From Stockholm to Ilindenski – a journey that began as seeking rest but became something much deeper. Nikolay doesn't "teach" – he shows you how to truly live the Bulgarian life.
Every morning – the aroma of banica and coffee conversations. Then – monasteries in the mountains, history told on location by people who carry it in their voices. Archaeology, nature, village conversations. And at some point – Bulgarian is no longer foreign. You think in it. You even dream in it.
One of the most unforgettable moments was our visit to Rila Monastery – a place of stunning beauty and deep spirituality. I was deeply impressed by its sense of timelessness, its ancient stones that seem to whisper stories from centuries ago.
The wine? Let's just say I've had my fair share – but Nikolay's young rosé and a certain 17-year-old red made me stop mid-sentence. Deep, real, memorable. Like the whole place.
Walks to the sculpture park and peaks around the village became part of my daily routine. I learned to love tarator and shkembe soup, discovered that water in Sandanski has a different taste – more alive.
But most importantly: I discovered a new sense of life. Nikolay isn't just a host – he's someone who makes you rediscover yourself through Bulgaria.

"After twenty years in this village, I've learned that the most beautiful conversations happen when we stop trying to impress and start trying to connect."— Nikolay Kiossev
